University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are a brand new type of college you join at 14 or 16. There are around 40 all over the country. UTCs make learning come alive by using experts from local employers and real challenges from the world of work. You’ll learn practical skills and academic subjects together and develop personal skills employers want.
South Wiltshire UTC will use real world challenges from world class Engineering & Science employers to prepare you for your future career. Whether you want to go to university, start an Apprenticeship, enter the Armed Forces or progress to higher level study, joining the UTC will change your life.
University Technical Colleges (UTCs) open from 8.30am to 5.00pm and for 40 weeks a year. This gives you extra time to learn – roughly half an extra year of teaching every 2 years compared to most schools. We combine GCSEs and A Levels with industry-approved technical qualifications in Engineering and Applied Science. You also take part in a wide range of enrichment activities to develop you as a person and build your attractiveness to a future employer.
At South Wiltshire UTC you’ll also have a wide choice of these activities to stretch you as a person – such as building a quadcopter, taking part in sport, our Navy-led Combined Cadet Force (preparing for full accreditation), aiming for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, building robots or taking part in Art.
University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are open to all learners who want to join. There’s no test to get in at Year 10 – you just have to be prepared to work hard during our 9-5 day, work in a professional manner and grab the unique chance the UTC will give you. We were fully subscribed when we opened in September 2015.
Year 12 (Sixth Form)
Most of our sixth form courses are at A Level/BTEC Diploma standard and so you will need 5A*-C including Maths & English to show us that you will be able to cope at this level. For certain individual subjects you will need specific grades in relevant GCSE subjects. Please contact us for details.
For students who are capable of progressing to the BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering, but who will not reach the entry criteria at the end of Year 11, we offer a one-year full-time BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering. To enrol on this course you will need at least 2Cs and 2Ds including Maths and English.
One of the most exciting things about University Technical Colleges (UTCs) is the contact you’ll have with real experts. Our teachers will bring lessons alive with practical projects and examples from industry – many have worked in industry themselves. Guest lecturers from the University of Southampton and our world class local employers will show you how Science and Engineering work in the real world.
When you leave South Wiltshire UTC you will have real in-depth understanding of all the subjects you have studied and a wide choice of future courses and careers.
University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are open to all – there’s no such thing as a typical UTC student. You’ll help build and shape a whole new learning community.
